Guitar Making
Evening classes

About The Evening Classes
The guitar making evening classes are leisure classes aimed at people interested in making their very own guitar from start to finish, at a pace that they feel comfortable with. Taking place in The Guitar Workshop's fully equipped workshop in Govan, Glasgow, students will use hand tools and machinery as they learn traditional and modern guitar making practices.
The evening classes are limited to 4 students per session, and will take place on Thursdays from 6pm-9pm, and are booked in 8 week blocks (see below for dates, details, and FAQ's)
What You'll Build
Instruments will be limited to flat top acoustic guitars (sorry, no electrics... yet!) and you can choose from the following designs:
-
OM
-
Parlour
-
Dreadnought
-
Bouzouki (Guitar or A style)
-
Tenor

What You'll Learn
These classes will take you through the entire process of building a guitar, from planning your instrument and designing it's features, to applying finish and setting it up. An emphasis will be made on the use of hand tools, but machines will be used when appropriate. Here's an example of some of the skills you'll learn:
-
Confidence with hand tools including planes, trains, and automobiles (and chisels and files)
-
How to safley operate machines such as bandsaws, routers, sanders and more
-
Side bending by hand
-
Finishing (Oil based or French Polish)
-
Fretting and Setup work
About Your Teacher
I've been a full time guitar maker since 2014, but my interest in woodworking (and guitars especially) started at a much younger age. Over the years I've made most styles of guitars, including acoustic flat tops, electrics, archtops, and occasionally something somewhat experimental.
After several years of teaching guitar making at the local college, I wanted to offer a different kind of learning experience tailored towards smaller class sizes.
As for the instrument you want to create, I'm always up for a far out idea, or keeping it traditional. I can't wait to guide you through the process of bringing your ideas to life.
